Ever since she was a little girl, my oldest daughter has loved mermaids! She reads books about them, draws pictures of them and even makes up spells to try to become one of them. She even asked Santa for a mermaid tail last year, WHAT???? My husband was convinced that she was just testing us, to see if Santa was real. I was sure that she truly believed that if she had a mermaid tail, she would be able to live in that fantasy world she was imagining. Even though we did manage to find mermaid tails for sale, she did not get one. Santa said that he couldn't deliver mermaid tails because ... Read More about MERMAID TAILS BALANCE ACTIVITY
SPARKLY SENSORY STARFISH
We visit the beach every single summer. Every year when we visit the tourist shops that have aisles and aisles of beach souvenirs to choose from, my children always seem to end up by the bins of shells. Running their hands across all the different textures and shapes. Starfish always seem to win out with their bumpy, pointy textures. I keep hoping one year we will catch a glimpse of a live one in the sand. The kids would be overjoyed! For today, we’ll keep our real shell collections on the shelf and have some fun creating one of my favorite ocean crafts for kids: a textured starfish craft! Get ... MAKING WAVES!
I have jumpers in this house. My kids jump on beds, off the chairs, couches, stairs...anything they find their little bodies can fly from! This gave me a great idea for our ocean theme. Let’s make some waves! This is a great movement activity for body awareness, motor control, and proprioception. Older children will find it a fun challenge and little ones will simply love watching their animals jump and fly. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Ocean animal figurines, trampoline - if you do not have access to a trampoline, a bed or some couch cushions thrown onto the floor will work just as well. WHAT TO DO: ... Feet in the Sand Sensory Activity

This activity is great for proprioception, sensory integration, digit isolation in the toes, strengthening of the lower leg and foot muscles and motor control! Do you have a child who walks on his toes? This activity would address a lot of the potential reasons for that toe walking, including sensory processing issues, lack of strength in the muscles that pull the toes up, and proprioception. OCEAN DRUM
We’re happy to be featuring our good friend, Daria from World Music for Children with more great music activities for kids! To kick off our “Under the Sea” theme, we used Daria’s convenient instructions to put together an awesome Ocean Drum! This diy drum for kids is pretty simple to assemble - an adult will have some cutting and taping to do, but otherwise the kids can have at it! We used an empty granola bar box for the body of the drum and the clear plastic front of a box from a toy we had gotten for Christmas for the front of the drum. My little guy filled it with small blue, green, ... Read More about OCEAN DRUM

A Pediatric Physical Therapist Explores W-Sitting
Learn more about w-sitting and why pediatric therapists caution against this position. Each time I walk into a classroom, I can find at least 3 children who are on the floor in the W-Sitting position…and they kind of remind me of melting snowman. Their legs are wide around their bottoms, their trunk posture is often droopy and they aren’t able to move their arms outside of their base of support to play. I am constantly saying “fix your legs” or “NO “W” SITTING!”. What's so wrong with W-sitting? Let’s explore. What is W-Sitting? W-sitting looks like this: a child sits on the floor, ...
