Get ready for some creepy-crawly fun! This spider web maze turns prewriting practice into a game kids will want to play again and again. With a spider ring and a dry erase marker, your little one gets to guide a spider across the web to reach his friend at the end of the maze.
As a pediatric OT, I love activities that sneak in skill-building while kids are busy having fun. Plus some seasonal cuteness? Don’t mind if I do.
This one checks every box. It’s quick to prep, reusable, and easy to adjust for different ages and skill levels. It’s perfect for fall, Halloween, therapy sessions, classrooms, or a rainy afternoon at home.
Why We Love This Activity
The spider ring is the secret ingredient. Kids aren’t just drawing a line. They’re steering a spider, and that makes slow, careful movements feel like part of the game instead of a chore.
Here’s what kids are working on while they play:
Prewriting and pencil control. Staying inside the lines of the web builds the control kids need for writing letters and shapes.
Visual-motor coordination. Eyes and hands have to work together to guide the spider along the path.
Motor planning. Kids plan their route, start and stop, and change direction as they move through the maze.
Visual attention and focus. Watching for obstacles and staying on the web takes concentration.
Grasp and hand strength. Holding the marker with the ring attached gives the hand a little extra feedback and works those small muscles.
What You’ll Need
You only need a few simple supplies:
-Spider web maze printable pack (fill out the form below)
–Dry erase pouches or a laminator
-Spider rings (the plastic party-favor kind)
-Dry erase markers
-A cloth or eraser for wiping
How to Play
Prep your webs. Slide a spider web page into a dry erase pouch, or laminate it so you can use it over and over.
Make your spider marker. Grab a spider ring and slide your dry erase marker through the ring. Now the spider will ride along as you draw!
Start at the dot. Place the marker on the start dot and drag your spider along the web to reach his friend waiting at the end of the maze.
Stay on the web! Go slowly and carefully, and try not to fall off the web.
Wipe and try again. Erase and play again, try a different path, or move on to a trickier web.
That’s it! Because the webs are reusable, kids can play as many rounds as they like. Repetition is where the real skill-building happens, and this game makes repetition fun.
Pick the Right Web for Your Kiddo
Not all webs are created equal, and that’s on purpose! The pack includes webs at different levels so you can match the challenge to your child.
Some webs have lots of safe routes to the finish. These are perfect for younger kids or those just getting started. There’s plenty of room to explore, and kids can succeed even if their path wanders a bit. Other webs have obstacles to steer around, which makes them a little more challenging. These are great for older kids or anyone ready to work on more precise control and planning ahead.
Ways to Make It Easier or Harder
To make it easier:
-Start with the webs that have the most open paths.
-Let your child trace the route with a finger first, then try it with the spider.
-Use a thicker marker so small wobbles still stay on the web.
To make it harder:
-Choose webs with more obstacles.
-Try it on a vertical surface. Tape the pouch to a wall or easel to build shoulder stability and wrist extension.
-Add a challenge, like finishing without touching any lines or finding a second route to the end.
