There’s no better (or more fun) way to challenge a variety of motor skills all at once than a good old fashioned obstacle course for kids! The blizzard going on outside my window today inspired me to create this winter-themed obstacle course for kids. Do you live somewhere warm? Don’t worry – this activity is for you too! See below for how to play even if there isn’t any of the white stuff where you live!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: snow, a sled, and a snow shovel
No snow? No problem! You’ll need pillows/cushions, newspaper, and a laundry basket
WHAT TO DO:
Show the kids where the starting line is and then challenge them to perform the following tasks while moving toward the finish line:
-Make a snow angel.
-Trudge through a big pile of snow.
-Throw a snowball at a target.
-Move 5 shovelfuls of snow from one designated place to another
-Pull or push a friend, sibling, or parent on a sled to cross the finish line!
-Make a snow angel on the rug or in the grass.
-Stomp through a pile of pillows/cushions.
-Try one of our ideas for snowless snowballs!
-Pull or push a friend, sibling, or parent in a laundry basket to cross the finish line!
SKILL AREAS ADDRESSED: Strength, coordination, motor control, sensory integration, proprioception, endurance, balance, visual motor integration, grasp
Want to take a closer look at the skills kids are using in this activity? Check out our Clinical Closeup page, where we break down the skills listed below in terms everyone can understand.
